This painting refers to R2D2, the feisty little droid from Star Wars as the sheperd of a flock of sheep. The Dune Sea is a place way out in the desert of Tatooine. But in my childhood fantasies this location could be out my grandmother’s sheepcamp west of Tuba City, AZ. The painting is reminiscent of me playing with my Star Wars toys at my grandmother’s while herding sheep during the hot summer days. My imagination was fueled by the Star Wars movies, the toys and the landscape which was similar to the arid desert lands of Tatooine. There is a scene in Episode IV – A New Hope where R2D2 abandons C3P0 and ends up in a small canyon surrounded by several Jawas. This scene is so memorable because R2D2 realizes he is being stalked, then the Jawas stun him, capture him and take him back to their Sandcrawler where he is reunited with his companion.
