Honey Pot

Natural clay and pigments, 6.75"h x 6.25"dia, Item No. 22442,

During my first semester in my Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) graduate program for Painting and Drawing at the University of New Mexico I took a Pueblo Pottery class.  I learned so much about the process of making clay pottery, processing the clay, building the pots, different finishes and to the firing process.  All of these methods and techniques through a traditional Pueblo perspective.  It was very spiritual and grounding.  This particular pot is inspired by Winnie the Pooh’s most prized possession, his pot of honey.  Winnie the Pooh’s time is consumed of eating honey or looking for honey.  As a young child I loved Winnie the Pooh and his friends.  They were created from the mind of the boy Christopher Robin.  I wanted to capture that magic and transfer to one of my pots.  The pot was created with Micaceous clay using the coil method and shaped out a narrower neck and fluted lip.  Then I added an extra slab of clay using the “score and slip” method.  I carved the word “Hunny” into it.  Then I painted red slip all over the pot, even on the inside except for the area where it reads Hunny.  This was then Bisque fired, then a week later it was Raku oxidation fired.  This was my second attempt at the same pot.  This particular pot survived. All together, it took approximately  two to three weeks to complete from start to finish.
