As a child growing up on the Navajo reservation I was exposed to many of the Navajo art and artists that were readily available. I always remembered the drawing and watercolor paintings made by Harrison Begay. Harrison Begay began his art career after serving in World War II. He was so prolific in his unique classic Navajo stylized works. I believe these were created as the first 2-D works by Navajos coming out of the traditional sand painting styles in the 1950’s and 1960’s. There had been several Navajo artists that followed in this style but Begay was the most widely known and his works are still very valuable today. In this painting I stylized his work but instead of Navajos in their everyday life scenes, I added the Allosaurus going on a hunt. I also added the clouds and rainbow reminiscent of that classic Navajo art of Harrison Begay.
