Eric Romero Artist Statement:

Romero, Mestizaje blood con canvas.

Who am I. Quién soy.

I am? ¿Yo soy?

Brown eyes, brown skin, ¿Cómo se dice…?

Soy la Mestizaje,

WE are knowledge, I am naive. NOSOTRAS somos fuertes, I am weak.

I AM an ancestor to those much stronger than I. Genízaro, Hispana, Chicano, Mexicana, Nativo,

Brown, Güero, Sureño, Norteña, La Raza, La Gente, They Will BE.

The coyote, the bull, the jaguar,

Born to the soil, baptized by blood, Cured under the sun,

Pura Chingona. Mezcala Pura. Puro Mezcal. ¡Otra!

My ancestors, the oppressed, my ancestors, the oppressor,

Mírame!

Yo soy Joaquín, Same but different, sabes?… We have endured.

We bloom in the desert, Where there is nothing, we create, we thrive.

Yo soy, we are.

I am the feast, un poco de todo, I am the slaughtered, I am the butcher,

I am the father, Yo soy la Madre, I am new, yo soy vieja,

From here, ayer y mañana. ¡Siempre Nueva Mexicana!

Blood on(from) my hands, sweat from my brow, Fire in my mouth, pero my head is unbowed.

I am to be feared, when the mix comes together.

Yo soy Mestizaje.
