Saints and Sinners

Retablo; carved wood with pigments, 27"h x 17"w x 3.5"d, Item No. 24024,

This piece explores the contrast between good and evil, using familiar religious and cultural symbols to illustrate the tension between spiritual protection and moral temptation. Angels traditionally embody purity, guidance, and divine guardianship, serving as representations of goodness and spiritual strength.

In contrast, the Devil playing the fiddle draws from mythological and folkloric imagery. Across various traditions, the Devil is depicted as a musician who appears at moments of death or moral weakness. Religious leaders once referred to the fiddle as the “Devil’s instrument” because its lively music was believed to encourage revelry and sinful behavior.

The Saints and Sinners motif, along with the fork, carries particular cultural resonance in northern New Mexico, where it is also associated with a well‑known local liquor store bearing the same name. These elements highlight the region’s unique blend of religious symbolism, folklore, and community identity.
