Proceeds from this collection will directly benefit the LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund, an organization dedicated to helping artists recover and rebuild their creative practices during these challenging times.
About the Painting: Salvavidas: Incarcerated Firefighters of Malibu
Erin Currier’s painting reimagines Eugene Delacroix’s iconic masterpiece, Liberty Leading the People, through a modern lens. In her rendition, Currier transforms Delacroix’s symbol of Liberty into a figure of feminine strength and grace: an incarcerated woman turned firefighter.
The work honors the bravery of inmates in California’s Conservation (Fire) Camp Program, a joint initiative between the California Department of Corrections and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. These individuals, many of whom are incarcerated women, risk their lives battling wildfires to protect communities.
Currier’s work celebrates the dignity of laborers and incarcerated women worldwide, while also highlighting their critical contributions during the Woolsey Fire, where inmate firefighters comprised 30–40% of the firefighting force.
