Coil built natural clay with acrylic and wood stains, 11"h x 11"w x 10"d, Item No. 22142,
This double vessel is inspired by a rare palm nut found only in Africa. Its shape closely mirrors the actual size and form of the nut, recreated in clay. Susan was inspired to make "Coco de Mer" after visiting Amsterdam for the opening of the "Free Spirit" Exhibition in 2006.
The vessel is divided up into a male and female side. The male side features design elements drawn from a dream Susan had before her trip to Amsterdam. In the dream, she was on a boat with a young Dutchman, playing tag over the blue waters. The figure of a young woman near the base represents Susan dreaming. An airplane is also depicted, symbolizing her journey to Europe. This side is painted in more earthy tones.
The female side incorporates a mermaid, symbolizing Susan’s presence in the water, with brighter colors and more abstract designs representing the unexpected and unique experiences she encountered in Europe. These abstract motifs reflect her perspective as an American Indian exploring new cultural landscapes.
The Indian Head pennies grant the piece a lighthearted theme, representing the blend of business and pleasure during the trip to Europe, and symbolizing that the “Indians” had gone across the sea “to exchange ideas and sell pottery”.
Coil-built from natural clay with acrylic and wood stains, this gorgeous, deeply inspired vessel stands as both a personal narrative and a testament to Susan’s creative exploration across cultures.
