La Catrina in Solidarity

Acrylic & mixed media on panel, 36"h x 24"w, Item No. 22201,

  • La Catrina is an iconic El Dia de los Muertos figure, and the epitome of Mexico’s enduring spirit. Originally created by Illustrator José Guadalupe Posada in the early 1900s, La Catrina was born amongst a set of satirical calaveras (skulls). Posada’s illustrations were political art born out of necessity, and ‘a denunciation of the classism of Mexican society’ as Currier states.

  •  “La Catrina in Solidarity” is comprised of lotería cards from Mexico; scratch cards; playing cards; a torn poster from a playa in Mexico ; a torn flyer from NYC; cupcake packaging; tickets from an Albuquerque roller derby; a Victorias Secret tag; a burrito wrapper; a sister bar poster: incense packaging.
