I wanted to create a full length large scale portrait of larger-than-life David Bowie: a personal favorite & considered the most influential musician of the 20th Century. There was no one like him: he was utterly original and unique in everything that he created. In addition to being a musician, dancer, visual artist, writer, and actor; Bowie as a true Seeker: his creative work was driven by a deeper poetic inquiry. Thus, he shared many of my own interests: in Buddhism, Beat poetry, gnosticism, and mysticism, for example. He also leveraged his fame in the service of civil rights. For all these reasons, Bowie perfectly embodies the theme of my new series.
All the ‘post-consumer waste’ layered into the background references his life and work: torn rock & political posters from Berlin; Athens; Istanbul; Palermo; Mexico; Buenos Aires; loose pages from an old astronomy textbook; a lucky charms cereal box; a mercury cigarette pack from Beirut; incense packaging from Bali; surgical gloves from Santiago; a Nick Cave sticker; & more…
