Ceshtomiⁿ Oxobe (Blue Moon)

Pencil / graphite, gouache, copper leaf underlay and inkjet on map collage on Kansas tax ledger, Image: 18"h x 12"w, Frame: 25.25"h x 19.25"w, Item No. 21977,

This work and The Sacred in Motion are both inspired by the rematriation of Inzhuje Waxobe (Grandfather Rock) or the Sacred Red Rock which was returned to the Kaw Nation in 2023.  The monumental quartzite boulder (known as a “glacial erratic”) was removed from the confluence of 2 rivers where it sat for millennia, after travelling by glacier from the North and placed in Lawrence KS as a monument to pioneer settlers.  Our people understood the journey this ancestor had taken, and the one in which it continues to travel.  The Scars of History pieces are also in reference to the recent events of the rematriation and together help to process the significance of this event for our people and the precedent it can set for others.
