In the secret depths of the Grand Canyon the night blooming datura opens with the setting sun. During the short hours while the moon traverses the gap of sky between the canyon walls, the extravagant flowers seem to glow in its silver light creating a magical garden visited by thrumming moths and the ever-curious ringtail cat on its nightly rounds.
On a recent month-long rafting trip down the canyon, I would venture out in the moonlight to see these hidden gardens; watching and listening until the moon slipped away, leaving my mind so alive with wonder I could hardly sleep.
