TANG MASK #2 and TANG MASK #3 depict the faces of Chinese women during the Tang Dynasty (618 - 906) regarded by historians as a high point in Chinese civilization and a golden age of cosmopolitan culture.  Tang fashion was considered the height of fashion.

Early Tang trends were marked by elaborate dress and hair design.  Hair ornaments became lavish and hair volume bigger and bigger with the help of “fake buns”.  The ornaments were most often floral motifs made of gold pieces and precious stones.  A woman’s hairdo could reach as much as a foot in height, making it to appear to have huge volume and mass.

Women of the Tang Dynasty also paid particular attention to facial appearance.  Between their brows, they often wore a colorful design called Juan Dian.  These small designs were painted or made with specs of gold and silver.
