Princess Kailulani was heir to the throne of Hawai'i and should have succeeded her aunt- but the US government overthrew the monarchy in 1893 and annexed the island nation in 1898. Kaiulani died 7 months later from what some described as a broken heart over her lost country. In her short life she proved to be a powerful advocate for her people - the fact that it took the US government as long as it did to take over the island nation is a testament to Kaiulani's ability to influence and to sway public opinion.
