Sai Baba

Acrylic and mixed media on panel, 36"h x 24", Item No. 12663,

Sathya Sai Baba (1926-2011) the reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi, was an Indian guru and philanthropist, of whom miraculous abilities-- such as manifesting vibhuti (sacred ash) from his palms-- were attributed.  He founded the Sathya Sai Organization, "to enable its members to undertake service activities as a means to spiritual advancement", with over 1,200 Sathya Sai Centres in 126 countries. Although Sai Baba's life was fraught with controversy-- he attracted untold numbers of devotees and skeptics alike-- the great humanitarian work he accomplished: of free hospitals, clinics, drinking water projects and schools, is unassailable.

I had the privilege of visiting Sai Baba in Puttiparthi, India, in 2001, and witnessing, firsthand, a little of the magic and mystery, as well as the compassionate acts, of this unique man.
