War Dance VI

Pencil/graphite, gouache, ink, map collage and embroidery floss on US Cavalry recruitment ledger, Image: 15.5"h x 10.25"w, framed: 22.25"h x 17.25"w, Item No. 20704,

"European and American colonizers have often depicted Indigenous People as war-like, or savage. While the figures in these drawings are indeed warriors, they are not ‘savage’, they are spiritual and cultural warriors in defense of all peoples. In this series of drawings, behind each central figure are colors and patterns that echo Ghost Dance regalia or US military insignia which explore the intersections between art and warfare. The maps represent Indigenous homelands with US military weaponry whose names have coopted Indigenous peoples and culture." - Chris Pappan
