Spirit of Kitihawa
Pencil / graphite, color pencil, map collage on 1871 Chicago Jewelers ledger,
Image: 10"h x 15"w, framed: 17"h x 23"w, Item No. 16458,
This work is thinking about the origins of the city of Chicago (where I live) and the unknown indigenous contributions. Kitihawa was the Potwatomi wife of Jean Baptiste Du Sable, the “first” settler of Chicago. The map collage shows current downtown Chicago where Kitihawa and Jean Baptiste lived. This piece will also be featured in a public art project on CTA “El” trains and stations this summer (2019).
