Cowboy/Indian. Good/Bad. East/West. In her captivating assemblages, Sarah Sense explores the dualities she finds at the intersection of popular culture and her background as a Native American woman. Sense deconstructs old movie posters and digital photos of herself, adds glistening mylar strips, and weaves all the elements into mattes and baskets using traditional Chitimacha basket weaving patterns. Each assemblage becomes a stunning new narrative that empowers women and Native Americans while preserving an ancient art form.
