The inspiration for the vigil is from my maternal grandfather being in WWI. Like many young Hispanic men in New Mexico he volunteered in part to prove that they were loyal Americans. So when they left the villages and farms of New Mexico it left a void of young fathers, brothers and sons. I wanted to show the families waiting at home, praying for the men’s safe return. As we know, many did not and it took a long time for the survivors to come home. That’s why it depicts women, elders and children only.
