Sor Juana’s Dream tells the story of the 17th century Catholic nun and more significantly, the first Latina poet, scholar, playwright, theorist, and intellectual. In the rear of the piece a “curtain” is drawn back to reveal actual details from her life, whereas the front offers an interpretation of her life not given focus. It tells the story of the romantic relationship between Sor Juana and her benefactress, the Viceriene, Countess Paredes of Spain. The front details a tattooed skin-like surface on her chest and is an actual sonnet to the Viceriene in which she describes her desires. In this revisionist interpretation Sor Juana is finally able to express her desires for another woman openly and without fear of condemnation.
