Carmen Shea says...

Stunning; I saw this in person at Blue Rain a few years back, and it is indeed breathtaking. I adore opals and sapphires.

Jeanine Piper says...

Lovely,
Keep it coming Tammy !

Dorothy Potter says...

All SO BEAUTIFUL--but not meant for small spaces!

Bill Siebler says...

This is what a collaboration can often achieve: work that stands on its own as a fine object of art and is not recognized as being by either of the artists - something entirely new. This is art that is not just an enhancement of each artist\'s work.

Dorothy Potter says...

Beautiful work! It must have entailed hours and hours of intense creativity!

Johanna Elik says...

Another stunning painting!

dayle cline says...

Beautiful images.

Patti Cody says...

We have one of Tony\'s large paintings which brings us joy every day in our \"Santa Fe\" room in Dallas! My husband thought it was too large but somehow I knew it would work! It is fabulous!!!! Tony is a master!

Sherry Maly says...

This horse is beautiful!!

Harry Frank says...

Very much like the deer holding fish pot. Many of Naranjo\'s works I find a bit too far from the traditional pueblo pottery I collect (Autumn, Linda Cain, etc.), but this piece maintains the traditional sensibilities with enough modernity to seem an expansion rather than a departure.

J. Smith says...

What fun and adorable pieces to display!

says...

Hey Doug have you ever drawn Conan the barbarian?

Pam E says...

I have one of Ted\'s originals from about 1986 when he was in AZ. It\'s a gorgeous rectangular lapis in a diamond bezelled frame. The chain it came on was hand made by Ted. It\'s truly a treasure.

says...

Lovely painting and am happy that Rimi is doing some work in slightly smaller scale for those of us that have run out of space!

Allen and Linda Crockett says...

Doug,

This intimate piece is one of our favorites. While we love the sweep of many of your pieces, the approachable scale of this lovely little mesa beckons us. We usually pass through Ojo Caliente on our way to Santa Fe, so perhaps this scene is simply familiar. We think of you often.

MARGARET says...

SO PEACEFULLY BEAUTIFUL. DIGNITY AND GRACE

Susan says...

One if the best katsina dolls I\'ve seen. Wow!

Linda Gulinson says...

Stunning paintings. Amazing that you have painted for such a short period of time and are self taught. What a talent. I am an oil painter myself and know how difficult it can be to actually see and critique your own paintings. All the best to you, you deserve it.

From Tear down the wall, to build a wall, we need more people to stand up for what is right, keep up the good work, and let\'s. alll help to tear down the walls between us.
Thanks

Ásdís Vignisdóttir from IcelandI says...

I like this picture, it reminds me of the flower-time and it is beautiful colored and everything about the picture is so \"mother earth like\" and you want to go to the nature.

Katharine says...

Beautiful simplicity

Natalie Wells says...

Exquisite! Trouble finding the right words to express the complexity
and elegance of this piece. Awesome!!!

Natalie Wells says...

Amazing-elegant and poignant.

Natalie Wells says...

Elegant and the details are awesome.

Carolyn Fitzpatrick says...

I shall never tire of seeing the work of this amazing artist. I find him to be truly extraordinary. I would love to visit his studio/workshop as the mastery of his technique intrigues me. Thank you for sending this latest exhibit of very imaginative and emotive work. Each piece inspires. My wish is to someday own one.

Carol Overbeck says...

I\'ve been watching his work evolve for years now. It\'s always amazing to see it in person. His talent seems to grow with his ambition. I love these totems. Growing up in the Seattle area totem poles were a familiar sight and I loved native art from an early age. He takes that tradition and (for me, at least) brings it forward to the world as it is now.

says...

Beautiful work--I love the spirit of this picture.
Dorothy Potter

Irrina says...

I LOVE that he can make the most boring landscape look like a piece of art. I grew up in desert, and love its modest beauty.

says...

I wish I could see these in person. I\'m swooning - especially over the execution of water and the flowers. I like his pallet very much! He seems to use the colors and light in a unique and stylistic manner. I will commend this exhibit to friends in the area.

Love all of these, especially \"Winter Shadows.\"

D. B. Potter

Steve Won says...

These paintings are all beautiful.
The brush stroke, hue, her imagination, everything is well balanced.

Terri says...

the light on this is incredible! Thanks fsor your hard work.

Terri says...

delicate, ethereal, delightful

Carole L. Olson says...

I have actually seen this amazing painting at Blue Rain. I could not tear my eyes from this glowing image. One can only stand and sigh in front of this remarkable cow. No one else needs to attempt painting this animal. This is the quintessential animal art that any animal artist painter aspires to.

Carole L. Olson says...

Such an amazing artist! She captures the essence of these handsome animals. They make me happy just to look at them! I will come to visit these phenomenal works soon. I just wish Ms. Elliot would visit as well.

Donna Saytanides says...

Absolutely striking; showing the beautiful spirit and majesty of the subjects.

Donna Sanders says...

He ain\'t no St Nick! but he is the quintessential NNM vato artist
way to go Erin

myra Dalton says...

I love the depth, the signature style, the light and color. Truly Doug is one of my favorite artists. I have a poster of his work that hangs in my sitting room. It makes me so happy to contemplate seeing the desert scene for the first time and inspires awe within me.

says...

Cannupa\'s work is incredible.

Ruthfether says...

The totem is very unique, especially done in glass. I can see the \"collective effort\" as to me, it shows several different views of life and how people have different belief systems.I especially like the Northern Tribal designs at the foot of the totem(I suppose that to be where the artist might come from) then as the raven (another North American Tribal persona) opens the box and lets the birds, etc. Out.. We see another cultural groups beliefs emerging ( perhaps as the artist traveled he met new spiritual beliefs.) A totem expressing how people around the world all believe in things similar. I like it! Beautifully executed! Thank you for sharing your creation about creation, Mr. Singltary.

Ted Richardson says...

An amazing work of art, very balanced and unique.

Richard Spas says...

Beautiful!

Stephen Magsig says...

What a wonderful inspiring collection of paintings.

John Forder says...

Very nice!

Vanessa says...

Love this one, Billy! The dynamic composition, the off-scene implied action, the subtle tonal shifts with the perspective, that awesome turquoise bracelet highlight up front, and of course, that witty caption that leaves so much to speculatory imagination. Bravo--I say THE NEWS IS VERY GOOD.

Colleen Miracle says...

I love your shadowing. It\'s so amazing, especially in the painting of the Navajo sheep in Monument Valley. I can\'t afford to buy original art, but would be interested in purchasing a print..

Jay Tanner says...

I could not dream 1000 words to be worth the wieght of this picture . It silences me, and fills me with urgent respect for both the artist and the subjects

Francis & Joe says...

leroy- wow. who KNEW? i mean, is there ANYTHING you cannot do?????? :-)

these editions are TRULY; REALLY TRULY beautiful. they have an appealing subtle masculine aesthetic to them versus many other pieces of this style we\'ve seen for years in many galleries.

and the COLORS. so stunning AND unique. i mean.....our main thought, at this point, is what must it be like to live in your brilliant brain? :-)

Bill S. says...

It\'s been a pleasure to watch his work over the years and to have had the opportunity to watch his demonstrations at Blue Rain. Singletary is the consummate artist - highly skilled, elegant in his vision, and true to his culture.

bill c says...

It is always interesting to see an artist stretch into new wok

Colleen Miracle says...

My favorite flower in my favorite place!

Rigoberto De La Mora says...

The beauty of it all, I see , feel the fusion of styles , Culture , and personal passion , enjoyed it mucho , mucho.

Joyce says...

I love her work.

Charley Suggs says...

Wow! What an elegant piece. Tammy you have outdone yourself. With all of your bronze and glass and so forth it obviously feeds your muse to return to natural clay. While I will never be able to purchase a piece like this, I now own the vision.

Thank you for enriching our lives.

Bill Siebler says...

I\'ve always thought Allen\'s work was very special. My wife and I had the good fortune to see both her and Preston Singletary do demonstrations at Blue Rain during Indian Market several years ago. Both demos were first-rate. I was already a Singletary fan, and I have enjoyed watching Allen\'s career and art advance to higher levels.

Hi Billy- Many congratulations from us to you on your new adventure. we CANNOT imagine a better paring than you/your utterly masterful fine art with the fabled (as IT should be) Blue Rain Gallery; an ever-increasing, even almost sole place to go for nearly all of one\'s fine art desires. For US- endless money would mean daily purchases from Blue Rain to include ANY of the current and future spectacular works that you have/will be competing, we are sure. We\'ve already started saving- :-)

Best of luck to both parties (and to us- in getting there FIRST for the pieces we most desire- lol!!)

Rob Wilfong says...

I think that the pottery is an exceptional work of art!

Erin says...

Passing the torch is an exceptional piece from an already exceptional artist. Jim\'s ability to handle fire-- and the light that emanates from fire, flame, lamplight, at dusk, at night, and from the various phases of the moon; is masterful and nothing short of magic. Pure Northern New Mexico magic! And Kristen\'s frames complete the work in the manner that the work deserves.
It is an honor to show alongside the Vogels at BRG!

This is titled \"Avanyu\" the water serpent, and it is an excellent early work by Tammy and Preston. There is an individually bound booklet that describes the piece and the process of creating it. An outstanding collectors item!

Ryndee- What a gorgeous painting! These must be Cerro de Santa Clara and Cerro Guadalupe, which are distinctive volcanic relics generally between Mount Taylor and the Jemez. You might take a look at the New Mexico Centennial stamp which has another fabulous Doug West landscape titled \"Sanctuary\" with these same volcanic features but in a totally different mood.

Saw this piece today at the Autry. It is truly amazing and captivating. You can\'t tell from this picture, but it is about 5 feet tall and the luster is alluring. There is a good reason they put it as the greeting piece in their gallery at the Autry. If you haven\'t seen this piece in real life, you are missing something wonderful. Hmmmm, can you tell it affected me?

I love the thought process behind the art as much as the final expression of the art itself. Provocative. I love this piece.

Ever since I was introduced to your Gallery by a dear friend, I have taken the time to visit your website periodically throughout the year.

Preston\'s work in glass is exceptionally beautiful and I have loved his work from the moment I was first introduced to his artistry.

I\'ve not visited your Gallery in person. I only know your collections as they are featured online.

Thank you for this special enrichment. I love learning and I feel especially enriched right now.

Loving gratitude to you all.........Leah

Roseta,
Thank you for your glorious gift of \"Roseta Santiago\"; in the forms of your transcendent paintings, of which we are MOST fortunate to enjoy a couple in our home, though that number is SURELY to grow :-) , to the true near bible of Fine Art that IS your fantastic \"Conversations with Roseta Santiago.\" Wow!! THAT was an unexpected Master Class in all things related to Fine Art painting. It has changed and expanded our understanding of what painting IS, and further, what it SHOULD be. Very beautiful and beautifully done, and NOW the New Works for your New Show. Just as Spectacular as anything that one could imagine knowing even a little of your style. your works are just beyond description; except to say that there could be no higher complement from us in saying that to YOU. we hope to be the lucky recipient of at least ONE of these beauties. Not that you need it, given the beautifully described disciplined exploration of your inner world that is so important to you, but best of luck with your Show and THANK YOU SO MUCH for your kindness and for being the Fun, Honest, and Remarkably Talented person that you are! My best wishes,

George.

Ulrico Aleman says...

Highly recommended.

A year ago, I acquired a set of the above bas-relief edition. It fascinates me today the same way as it did when I first saw it. I hung it initially in a row of 4 as in the above picture, but recently separated it 2x2 right and left of an open doorway. In both configurations, the pieces communicate strongly with each other. There is a perfect formal balance in each of the pieces and in their entirety. The serene abstraction of the old Navajo symbols is to be admired equally as is the masterly execution of the bronze casting and its patination – it makes the reliefs react very individually to light and gives them gloss as well as deep hues.

A great work of art, not only one of Tammy’s best. I’m sure old Margret Tafoya would have loved, admired and commended it – not less than I do.

...and I wanted to add, I like the proportions... the placement of the smooth silver, which channels the busy-ness of the multiple strands into a single strong strand of stones. And the clear red ruby is like the meditative expression or eye, to remind us to be clear, strong, and fully alive.

Thank you!

Stephanie says...

This is so pretty! The colors are so strong. I like the long smoothness of the coral and the stark veining of the turquoise. Red coral represents passion and the blood of life (origins from the sea.) Turquoise is a healing stone!

As someone who has spent a good part of life around horses, cowboys and the west, I am incredibly moved by your work. Your horse is coming unglued and the rider seems right at home. The look of the horse\'s main, tail, hip joints all seem to show the beauty in his ride as well as showing really neat movement. What a wonderful work with the colors you used. I have loved your work since the first piece I saw, and now this is just great. It seems to some folks that it\'s a moral issue to introduce changes or new looks to the characters that make up the west, however it\'s done. It\'s not an attitude I have much empathy for, and with No Fear, you have shown the fallacy in that mindset for more eloquently than I could with a thousand words. What a great piece!

Doug, as you know, we've been collecting your work since the 1980s and are fortunate to have acquired more than 30 serigraphs, etchings, and monotypes. We will always love those styles but are thrilled to see how the large oil-on-canvas pieces have enabled you to capture even more fully, and realistically, the vastness of the American Southwest -- both its land and its sky -- in a single painting. "The Knowing" may well be your most beautiful work ever. We could stand in front of it for hours, taking in its sweep, imagining the sounds and smells of that place, and wishing we could be transported there at that precise moment. Congratulations on your successful, masterful evolution into this medium.

Who could believe that a dog could pilot a plane, but often the impossible is achievable and this is often shown to us in life. The message that I also gain is the pride of the dog in doing what it is doing and at day's end is the "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow that is the reward for perservering and belief that the seemingly impossible well may be possible. A true inspiration to us all.

Ron says...

I find this painting so incredibly moving. To me it is symbolic of thr resting place of Douglas Kent Hall. All that remains of his wordly life is his shirt that he may have worn during his passing. It is symbolic that we go out of this world with nothing but what we wear at the end. The dogs are lost without their master and best friend. The dog lying across the grave weeps at the loss while the standing dog stares in anxiousness and bewilderment seeking his master. The peacock maintains its regal stance but is with the dogs to share the grief. A beautifully expressive and thought provoking painting.

Ron says...

Your work is stunning and incedibly imaginative and has a unique meaning and emotional connection for each viewer. Joshua, I would very much like to know what motivates you to create such works and what your personal interpretation is behind them. What sparked you to do this piece of work? What mesage do you wish to convey?

Ron says...

Joshua I find your paintings are stunning and thought provoking. They tell a unique story to every viewer through their experiential backgroung and emotional past experiences. I would very much like to know the inspiration that inspires you to create such original and rivetting pirces of art with strong messages and raw emotion

I love these buds. I want to see them on my altar, greeting each day and saying good night.

I want to cherish them.

But I have their photograph, and I will give that to the altar, and all will be well.

Salome Waters says...

The strong colors and striking pattern almost makes you forget to see the meticulous rolled clay underneath.

Most beautiful. I love the way the pattern comes to such a neat and perfect end just under the lip.

This is so STRONG!

The strapping is bone and the ligaments (?) holding the joint together. Mind blowing.

And underneath the quiet bowl, holds it handles like the quiet sky holds the earth.

Maple is a very dense wood, hard to carve. It dulls carving tools quickly. Maple carvings are uncommon. Here is an amazing example of one, and it takes full advantage of maple's ability to hold detail.

Noor Singh Khalsa says...

"Turned wood" does not begin to describe this. It is obviously made painstakingly from glued, segmented rings. But what of the textured, unpolished portion? The photograph does not reveal its attributes, but there is a tantalizing glimpse of striations on the far left.

Saw one of the pieces in a June ad in American Art Collector and was immediately drawn to it. Unfortunate family matters caused a lapse in persuing information about it further, until last night. I somehow had a vision of the painting and could not remember which magazine or month I had seen the painting. After pouring through about 20 magazines issues over the last 4 months I located the right month and magazine. What is it they say about things that are meant to be. Don't know what will be the outcome, just wanted to say that when a piece of art speaks to one's heart and spirit, it truly does.

I have always regretted not buying Washi with the paper samples when I lived in Santa Barbara.
And I still have one of your Medicine Shirt prints under glass (on my desktop -- wooden desktop, not computer) and a returned card I sent to you, probably 20 years ago.
Happy to see you are still doing work with paper.
Me, too...paper and silk and sometimes poetry. But I sorta lost my way in Australia. I think/hope that is changing.
All the best...come for a visit....

The wine bottle was an amazing depiction of the experience of addiction - the illusion of sharing what becomes a private hell. I really liked the shots of the body of Jesus with the artist's face superimposed and very ethereal, and then the very down to earth close ups of the artist's hands working with his materials - it was very satisfying.

You are truly a talent Mr. Namingha! Thanks sooooo much for sharing your beautiful work with the world.

Susy Moesch says...

Dear Tony,

I am particularly fascinated by your charcoal/mixed media paintings on paper. When viewing the above before reading the title I was thinking this is a creation story, creating order out of chaos. Very expressionistic and so immensely powerful. If I had this work in my possession I would never tire of looking at it and find new images to fascinate me all the time.
I am a BFA student and have to write an essay on postmodernism and curate (in my mind only) an exhibition of 5 artists and write a curator's essay 600-8-- words long. The above will be in my curated show. I could write 800 words just about your work only.

I wish you good luck and thousands and thousands of more creative hours so we, the public, can enjoy what you have created.

Thanks Paulette for your comment. This was a first for me, and a lot of fun. Of course by virtue of the size of this canvas, it remains in progress still. But the beauty of the videos produced by Blue Rain Gallery is they offer a glimpse of artist's studios and their individual creative process... a view collectors rarely see.

Awesome! Thank you, Blue Rain and Tony Abeyta, for sharing. It is especially interesting to see how any artist begins and ends a piece.

#1. Tony Abeyta is one of my favorite artists, if not my favorite. Every brush stroke seems to have meaning. #2. His technique seems in harmony with his subject matter, and his subjects resonate for anyone who loves the southwest. #3. I hope he does more large canvases like the one in the video!

Shirley Keller says...

Very inspiring to see the level of detail Tammy works in. I am relatively new to pottery. Faces speak to me and my pottery friends keep trying to get me to branch out from masks, but I hear the voices and must answer. I am not a detailed person, so to see the quality Tammy achieves is adding an inspiring push to move to a new level of work. Thank you for this lovely web site. To hear Tammy speak of her work is wonderful, and to hear the exploration never ends is fun to think about. I started art late in life so it is unrealistic to reach the level Tammy is at, but still, the connection is felt. It's never too late, we are never too old, because life is a gift to explore.

Helga Düing says...

Vivian Casey says...

How interesting and fun to see how these amazing pots are fired! I was thinking that it would be a great video to show in a high school art class. I'm assuming that the fire is put out with the sand to allow the pot to cool slowly so that it doesn't crack.
Great video! Thanks for sharing it.

Elegant flow....very beautiful. The color is soft yet the power of the animals create a bold feeling of action as if they are to leap out into space.

I saw my first piece of Preston Singletary glass at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA yesterday. It's an absolutely gorgeous raven. Mr. Singletary is an extraordinary artist--in a class by himself. It's my hope that he doesn't become as commercialized as Dale Chihuly. Each of his pieces has an individual presence. Again - breathtakingly beautiful. The most exciting art I have seen in a very long time. It made my heart sing!

Maurice Kline says...

This piece has a light hearted, yet elegant form. The use of color is very unusual, especilly for a glass form. Very unusual, very beautiful.

KBeardsley says...

I looked at this painting a few days ago in Santa Fe and I believe it the most interesting and beautiful picture I have never seen. It looks like dreams that need to be explained to me.

As this was my first viewing of shelley muzylowski allen's art, I loved what for me was a surprise ending. I have seen glass artists at work before, and so was very impressed by the physicality and scale of the process. What really struck me was the simultaneous sponteneity (now, that's what I saw; perhaps every possible dribble was under control.) and deliberateness of the process. In my mind I "saw" the final result ... Alchemy! Magic! Not what was in my mind at all! Ah Ha! Beautiful. Thank you for the show!

sally allen says...

wow! what a great film. I had never seen you doing your own work start to finish. You seemed so focused and in control.Maybe it's the feminine touch but differant from watching Rik or Bill. Julia and Jacob watched it with me and were facinated by the whole thing. We have to get them out there to really see the scale of it all. Love to you and Ric, Sally

Veronica says...

Amazing - I have seen you working in person and now on the video. Just watching it sends me through all sorts of emotions- power, calm, assertive, precision, control and a little anxiety and stress. It is so intense and you perform it so well. And the outcome-magnificent. Carry on...I will live vicariously through you!

Catherine Naylor says...

When I viewed the video clips of my neighbor Deborah Rael-Buckley on this site, I was struck by all that her art form demands of her. The physicality of her whole body as she moves around her creation, bending over it, molding it, her arms and hands building, layering, and smoothing it; a disciplined technical skill required to control what could be a run-away process; a mental and spiritual concentration exacted to “gather the images” from memory and even from what has been forgotten; and a keen presence to be at one with what is becoming in her studio: all signs of a master ceramicist.

When I first stepped into Deborah’s studio a few years ago, I stood before a ceramic sculpture in tribute to her father-in-law who had died from cancer, as my father recently had. Her sculpture held memories and symbols so powerfully present and real in all of their dimensions, that all I could manage to do, was to turn around and walk back home accompanied by my father, remembering him again, and how much I had loved him and still do.

Gracias Deborah!

Eerie and exquisite...such mastery and control of the medium.

Bill Pallman says...

i now know why people think they see UFO's in New Mexico. This pottery is out of this world! Well done Russel Sanchez, well done indeed.

Kathleen E. Hendrick says...

I am amazed by the depth of meaning within the pieces that Deborah Rael-Buckley creates. She creates these sculptures that are life sized without any internal support system. They have so many hiddent meanings that relate to her background, New Mexico culture and life in general. They are incredibly rich and beautiful. The colors and shapes make them unique on their own but there is this deeper message that lies beneath the surface that waits to be interpreted. I happen to be an owner and and am always surprised at the reaction generated when people encounter Deborah's art for the first time. Once people get beyond the sheer beauty of the sculpture they ask numerous questions about the symbolism incorporated within the piece. She is able to mesh earthy beauty with commentary on life.

This is such a beautiful piece, there are so many interesting details to look at.

Joan Planek says...

What a magnificent composition! This may be the best Vogel I have ever seen. And the frame is perfect for it--not at all overwhelming--an excellent choice.

Richard Zane Smith says...

I think of cities as vulnerable places,
places where people could panic if
food was not delivered by trucks
or when power failures wear out
even a heros patience...

I'm not a doom and gloomer
I just like being away
from such man-made places

Richard Zane Smith says...

imagine a pool of water and fossil stones

I love to follow the creeks
and wandering and winding i find secret pools
or hidden rock gardens of incredible beauty
and in one flash flood a creek bed is cleared,
new boulders, and new swirls of sand and gravel
as a record ,a testimony of time and endless change

Richard Zane Smith says...

Reviving our Wyandot language has been a passion of mine
also to draw inspiration from my ancient Wyandot ancestors.
this piece combines Wyandot form
and its castellation rim with the ancient ancestors of the Pueblo peoples whose corrugated ware still dot the ground in the southwest.
I love to blend ancient techniques of this land and to come up with something that feels as if it has life
Our Life is actually that meeting place of past ancestors and our future descendants

Richard Zane Smith says...

Co-creating along with the action of nature
this is a time in my life to occaisionally let the materials
have a voice in themselves and not always be trying to
overpower the clay forcing it by my own minds eye...

Its difficult for us perfectionists to step back...
to allow clay to remain clay

I love finding these roots with rocks imbedded.
Its spring time, warm enough to wade the creeks, looking for such treasured pieces of wood and to keep an eye out for
Water moccasins who also enjoy the roots along the banks.
I saw six of them last time i was out in waders.

Richard Zane Smith says...

I call this one "Handled Piece" as a bit of a pun.

I couldn't believe my fortune to stumble on this incredible root
on the edge of a torn out bank out here on Sycamore Creek.
I doubt I will ever find another so hand like in all its ways.
The pot was made especially for the wood piece itself.

An alternative way to display it is to place the vessel on a base
and place "the hand" so it is reversed, with its thumb in the air
and sort of cupping the "fingers" around it.
I was a little sad to see this one go...

Richard Zane Smith says...

This particular piece i did just as the spring colors all around us were replacing the gray and bare woods of winter.
In just a few weeks the hardwood forests that are so still and somber have become a busy force of bursting life .
the adders tongue shoot up starlike blossoms under the still bare canopy of oaks and the trillium and May apple send spikes unfurling as they push through the decomposing leaves from another season. Then comes the redbud and the dogwoods.
here I tried to contrast the green vines of new life with the bare trees showing winter coming to an end

Richard Zane Smith says...

this was a fun piece to create.
I call it simply "Crazy Arrow"
the piece of root i found along Spring River north of here,
the arrow points i made out of local chert, and the turkey wing fletching was from feathers given to me by tribal members of the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma .
The clay is native Oklahoma clay dug from a ranch in the Vinita area. The owners of the ranch are Cherokee and I'm so pleased
they so willingly share with me and even attending the prayers before the digging of clay starts.
and sometimes sharing a pipe of traditional tobacco.

This is a very interesting piece. All things are inter related with nature, human form and the crow from the animal world. The subtle colors are beautiful and the bone-like rungs of the ladder are so connected to the past. I can't say any more until Deborah goes into her articulate speaking about it. I hope she will do that.

This blanket was designed by George Hunt Jr., a Northwest Coast artist from the Kwakiutl tribe. The original limited edition series of the blanket, made in 1995 for the American Indian College Fund, consisted of 1200 blankets. Each blanket came with a stitched on label showing the blanket's number in the series(such as 200/1200).

Reproductions of this blanket were made about 10 years later and were also sold to benefit the American Indian College Fund. Per their website "Tribute to My Grandmother Mary Ebbets, Anislaga" was designed by George Hunt, Jr., a renowned woodcarver of the Kwakiutl tribe of Vancouver Island. Mr. Hunt, Jr. dedicated the design to his great-great-great-grandmother, Mary Ebbets, or Anislaga. As Tlingit legend has it, Anislaga was the living link between the ancient Tlingit culture and contemporary tribal weaving traditions. In ceremonies the blanket is "danced," bringing to life the story of how Mankind was taught to weave by Raven, Lynx, Sea Monster and Bear; when worn, these sacred images surround the wearer."

Kristine Andra says...

This is an exceptional piece. Unique to Bruce's work in the sense that it could symbolize the many challenges we face in our own unique spiritual quests for truth. It is both strong and gentle. In my opinion, Bruce LaFountain is one the best scluptors in the world. Having been and lived in Italy where many artists have their pieces constructed and watching the skill of these people and the process that is involved in obtaining marble, which few can work with; To watch Bruce LaFountain work with stone is an art in and of itself. Few have remained true to the craftmanship and Bruce is one of those who can transcend all barriers and will exempfy this within his work. Although, many pieces "appear" similar to the untrained eye, if we look beyond the surface of Bruce's work we will see he will show us that life will reflect art and art will reflect life of which neither are static.

Michelle Lafountain says...

I am just in awe over these piece on this site. This one especially I would have to say is my favorite. I feel a connection here. Maybe its because of my name. Misko asin ekway (Red rock woman) It look like a strong spiritual person. Love You Bruce

I discovered Tammy's work on a recent trip to Sante Fe. The precision is remarkable. How she can transform her mind's eye into the material's available is the talent of a true genius, but first and foremost, it must be in her mind.

Dear Tammy, Leroy and the Staff at Blue Rain Gallery,

Now that the dust has settled, we would like to recognize what a great honor it was to host the patina demonstration at your gallery during Indian Market, 2006. Wendell Harris says...

I do wish that galleries and museums would stop assuming that everyone who buys art is a "collector." Many occasional buyers of art (my wife and I included) buy what we see thatt we like and can afford at the time. To buy is not necessarily to "collect."

Bobbi says...

Thanks for the "4 points" on buying. Now...how about elaborating a bit on each. That would be great. For instance, What is the significance of the number of pieces the artist produces each year? What does one look for to see if a piece is well made? What do you mean by "pricing integrity"?

Thanks for the good blog.
